Part 17

The tires squealed to a halt and Michael looked at her.

"WHAT?"

"Are you interested in a wedding?" Lisa replied.

He stared at her as though she'd gone completely and utterly mad.

"Why are you staring at me?" she asked simply.

"I think you've gone completely and utterly mad."

"Me? You're the one that just stopped the car in traffic."

Behind them came the argumentative squall of a million car horns. Michael continued driving. What sort of a question was that to ask a fellow?

"You haven't given me an answer."

Michael kept his foot on the gas and his eyes on the road. "Explain what the question's about first, please."

"I am inviting you to come with me to my friend Emily's wedding. It's next weekend."

Releif poured over Michael like water on a hot day. "Oh, your friend's wedding. Thank God for that."

"What? Did you think that I was..," Lisa laughed. "Oh dear, that's just too funny. No wonder you stopped in the middle of the road."

"You're laughing! How can you laugh, we could've been hit by a car and killed. How would that have been, to die at crosspurposes and all?"

"Very Shakespearian," Lisa replied, still laughing. "OK, so, now we've sorted out the question, your answer is?"

"I'll give you one after dinner."
