Awake! (not Greece- she is awake!)

The year is roughly 490 BCE (give or take a few years). The Persians have massed a vast army with which they plan to defeat and conquer the Greeks. The Greeks, however, have a plan.

The war has gone on for months when the armies meet at Marathon. The Greek phalanx meets the Persian archers on the field. Thirty thousand Persians let their arrows fly in the first stroke of battle. The Greeks hold back, the phalanx of nine thousand men stands and waits.

There is a pause. The Persians move to restring their bows, but it is too late. The Greeks are upon them and there is no longer chance for arrows to fly. The Persians are defeated.

The soldier Pheidippides is commanded to return with news of the victory. He takes off running, and continues to run the entire 22 1/2 miles from Marathon to Athens.

Pheidippides arrives at the palace in Athens crying "Nike! Nike!" (Victory) And drops dead.

This is the reason I LOVE my Humanities class.
